Black and White

It takes a president who is black to bring out the best and the worst in some of us. Seems there are those that want to optimize the opportunity to show their true colors by wasting our precious time trying to sell the public on President Obama being born in Kenya! Good. It’s so absurd that, at least for me, the Fool is showing itself more clearly than ever.

I’ve been exposed to prejudice ever since I can remember. When I was three years old I began recognizing the difference in my thinking from my parents. It started with comments about our neighbors who were Irish. My mother would point out generalities like “they always fight and drink”. In my young mind I thought all people who are angry argue or get physical. I used to see my Jewish adopted father chase my half brother Alan around the house with his fists clenched making threats that were a blur. My brother would always outrun him and lock himself up in the bathroom until tempers cooled down. What’s the difference between our neighbors, the Sullivan’s, and us, I would think. Read More »

MUSIC RULES!

Our Universal language is Music; beautiful sounds, emotionally provocative. All sounds, whether sweet or bitter, resonate… raises chills on our skin; causes our hearts to race; brings tears to our eyes.

Speaking of tears, my latest inspiration while in Los Angeles was recording a new version of  “It Only Hurts When I Cry” from Beach Blanket Bingo. How surprised I was to discover
a wonderful guitarist whose friend owned a studio I could record in and sing a song I haven’t sung since I was in my teens! And what a blessing to reconnect with friends who are investing themselves in a revival of my career. Jeffrey, a videographer and Bobby who is a world class percussionist just recently home from touring with another Donna…Summer. My son, Joey, said hello from a bass player he knew, Bob Glaub which spawned a connection to add his talent to my project. He’s currently on tour with Crosby, Stills and Nash. FYI, his brother attended Venice High with me. I am so honored to make music with friends. All this creativity culminated in doing a video debuting on YouTube this summer.

Seems that STARLOG MAGAZINE has opted out and will only be FANGORIA so Pat Janiekwicz who wrote the Batman article is looking into placing his “Batman Babes” into another publication. Keep you posted.

Hold on tight on this roller coaster ride.

Love you all,

Donna

A Day at the Beach

You know, sometimes, you just have to say f*#k it! Well, today I felt a huge wave of grief welling up inside. First, I decided to honor my Virgo moon and do some housework. Down on my knees I go; a roll of paper towels and some sudsy water. My balcony tile is 18″×18″, off white and dotted with gecko droppings, geranium and vinca flower petal stains and a fine layer of grime (a combination of dirt & ocean air). With a birds-eye view of the floor only inches away I merrily used up half  a roll of paper towels. I thought a little elbow grease would lift my gloom but once back on my feet (now touching a very clean surface) my head would still not raise off my chest. I looked towards the beach, which was like a postcard. I reached in my bikini drawer and picked out the most cheerful one I own, a teeny, weeny pink and white polka dot bikini with little tinkling charms, a bottle of MSM lotion (deep hydrating) and off I went. Want something sweet in your life?

little design for last minuteWith all the changes in my life, I’ve discovered a new sweet treat: Cacao of the Now.
First, let me tell you how it came into my life.
My daughter is studying nutrition and introduced me to a landmark market in West Hollywood, Erewhon.
One day, while sitting at their Tonic Bar, my daughter orders a special drink made with raw cacao. A young man sits down next to us and starts up a conversation. Normally, when a social activity such as I am describing occurs, the ‘bar’ serves anything but healthy beverages and the conversation is usually slanted towards an attraction one might have for another. Unique is the word for this experience. The talk is about Chinese herbs for longevity and Jing! What is Jing? It’s your Libido; the core of your being, your energy source. Andrew, the owner of a company called Cacao of the Now is sharing his latest creation with us, Truffles. He explains, as we are luxuriating in a bite of this decadence, that all the ingredients are GOOD for your body! What, no guilt! No sugar!  My mother in heaven, your chocolate addiction is being usurped by a super food that surpasses the finest Belgian, French or any epicurean delight. A masterful approach to satisfying the sweet tooth while adding longevity herbs to your body mixed with herbal sweeteners that fight plaque and cavities!!!!!!!! Ecstacy, I say, with a capital E!
Well my friends, Cacao of the Now has sweetened my days and so has Andrew. Thank you, Katie

1924-2009

Yesterday I received word of my mother’s passing.

Mom & Me

Mom & Me

It was also the birthday of my precious son.

I want to thank everyone of my mother’s friends who cared for her in her failing health. The last communnication I had with her was an opportunity to tell her she was going to be a great grandmother. I called her for Mother’s Day: no answer.

We had a very strained relationship and for too many years remained distant. The memories I have of my mom are when she was a young mother with a new baby and no husband. Her parents raised me while she worked and finally met her future husband who became my adopted father. I knew nothing of this until I was almost 50!

I’m writing my memoirs and will always love my mother for giving me life.

Abundance and Prosperity

What an epiphany! Doesn’t it feel good to know that we have abundance? Sure we’re led to believe by the powers that be that in order for there to be enough to go around that there will be sacrifices. Of course our patriarchal society wants us to feel lack. How else can they dominate us? Well, I’ve got news for you, you start thinking Abundance and Prosperity and inch by inch life begins to change.

Our body chemistry feels joy even if there is a cloud of despair trying to take it away. Patience and perseverance  becomes the vehicle that keeps you on your path. I have a very strong spirit in me that says “remember to be devine with light from the source”. Whenever I’ve been lied to or manipulated, my spirit finds resilience to recover and bounce back. I think it’s because I have the soul of, what I like to call, a ’spatula warrior’. Great in the garden. Great in the kitchen. Devoted to wellness and love. I want to know that my contribution to this planet will translate into more creative ways to heal and maintain independence, preserve youthfulness and be in dignity and grace .

So, yesterday, a shift occured and a stronger conviction of empowerment through right mindedness is guiding me to affirm Abundance and Prosperity.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

One particular time in my life my mother showed me divine kindness. It was when I was  six months pregnant with my third child. Christmas was coming and the nights were getting shorter and shorter. By 4:30 the sun was setting.

Our house was in the midst of a remodel and the kitchen had been demolished. The refrigerator was moved outside  under an eaves, next to the door to the dining room. Every night I would go outside to get the milk to make cocoa for my children’s nightime drink. I caught a chill that produced a fever. My first daughter caught my cold and we began to decline into illness. My fever raged on, weakening me. We were bed ridden. We took over-the-counter meds and homeopathics. After a few days I noticed I was losing weight; 10 lbs. and I was 6 mos. pregnant! Read More »

City of Angels

Here, in the City of Angels I always feel blessed to be with my children and friends. It’s Saturday  and my daughter and future son-in -law are house hunting. While they’re busy I contemplate music streaming through my head. I reflect on my Shindig days when my musical family and I broadcasted good vibrations all across this country of ours. I fondly recall a great guitarist, James Burton whom I met when I was only 8 years old. We made music together through the 80’s. Hello James, wherever you are.

My new friend, Jenine and I are doing a spa day. I am trusting the decision to go to her favorite one. Always feel like a limp noodle after a massage, do you?

My grand dog, Lola will have to be content with her ‘world’ toy from me when she has the house to herself. She sleeps with it in her mouth and when mommy or daddy try to take it away she growls (in her sleep). Of course I gave her the world!

Here’s hoping you are having a peaceful and productive weekend.

LA Bound

Today I am leaving my beautiful island  and heading for the west coast to be with my beautiful daughter, Kt and her puppy, Lola. Also, my husband, Jered is joining me for a few days. We will be visiting one of his friends, PF Sloan who wrote Secret Agent Man.

For the past month I have had a very creative time working in a recording studio with a marvelous musician named Charles Brotman (grammy award winner). He has helped me produce a song I wrote called “Love it Away”. Soon it will be available for you to listen to and download.

While I am in the City of Angels I plan to meet up with a writer who has interviewed me . I will post the release date of the publication and hopefully offer it right here on my blog. Many positive plans on my agenda with a little rest in between.

Be well,dl
